House passes bill requiring police to get a warrant to search cell phones

It appears Rhode Island government has done something correctly for a change. The Providence Journal is reporting that the House has passed a bill requiring law enforcement to obtain a warrant before searching the contents of a suspect’s mobile phone.

Rep. Edith Ajello, D-Providence, cast it as an effort to catch state law up to evolving technology and protect personal information.

The bill is now pending approval in the Senate before it heads off to the Governor’s desk for his signature.
